Our Manifesto

York has a great sporting tradition. But both its professional sports teams play at grounds that are old and unfit for purpose, threatening their existence. Such a great city deserves an equally great Community Stadium.

We believe that:

  • York requires a new community stadium to secure the future of professional sport in the city. York City FC and York City Knights must not be allowed to die.
  • All local politicians and sports teams must unite behind the cause, state how they will assist the project and work together to ensure that a new ground is built.
  • The new stadium will bring enormous benefits to the people of York and the surrounding area. The stadium can be built and must be built.

This site will monitor progress on the development, help co-ordinate fan campaigns and work with our politicians to ensure that we have A Stadium For York.

Back the pledge:
We are putting together a list of local businesses and fan groups who are committed to these these three basic pledges. In the meantime, join the Facebook group and the mailing list.

I think a community stadium for York is a great idea and would fully support it. However, in focusing on football and rugby, you are missing one very popular local sport: hockey.

The City of York Hockey club has a playing membership of several hundred – drawn from all ages. Over 32 teams are put out on a weekly basis with great success for youth development teams, adult mens & ladies teams and veteran teams. The club recently won a European Merit Award for its dedication to development of players.

Unfortunately, despite its youth development and playing success, its facilities are suffering. The club relies on hiring pitches from local schools, colleges and universities and its central clubhouse is badly in need of repair.

One great solution to this, and a timely investment in our local youth sport development, would be to encompass astroturf hockey pitches and a clubhouse with community rental availability into the wider picture of any Community Stadium site.

This investment would help launch the City of York Hockey Club up into the ranks of those who are seen as centres of excellence by the England Hockey Association – acting as hosts for national and international tournaments. This can only help boost the local tourist economy and help put York youngsters on the national hockey map.

Then you would have my full support.

I would be happy with a new community stadium even though I will be sad to leave Bootham Crescent. As long as the stadium is well thought through and planned I can only see it being advantageous for the city of York. The only concern I have is that a athletics tack could be installed into the stadium. This would be a very bad idea and would deter a lot of people from seeing sporting events such as football as the fans would be to far away from the pitch and the atmosphere of the traditional sports ground will be lost.

It must be a priority that rugby league is cater for properly. Hockey could take over the Huntingdon Stadium?

I think after 7 odd years of wrangling, its about time the council got on with it. Theres alot of blame games and signing of pointless bits of paper infront of the cameras, but nothing actually going on.

The council have’nt given any assurance to what will happen with the knights: where will they train, where will their kit be stored, how much will the rent be, where will the club get their revenue from, where will the reserve and academy matches be played?

All very simple questions but the council refuse to answer them.

No-one in their right mind would sign their club up to anything without knowing the basics. Im sure that if Gilford got those answers, hed snap their hands off. Who wouldnt?

As long as the knights and city will be NO WORSE OFF, then a shiny new stadium with nice new turf would be just what both clubs need to bring them into the 21st. Saying that, the knights dont owe the gdp of a small country and need to sell their ground to pay it back.

The original idea was to have this stadium built in time to welcome the nigerian olympic team was it not? Thats in just over a year time yet theyre still sat round, dunking the taxpayers biscuits.

I think the 2015 deadline was possible once, but its looking like well have to wait until we get a proper council in.
