Community Stadium
It’s nearly a decade since it was decided to actively plan and build a new Community Stadium for the City of York. We believe not nearly enough progress has been made, jeopardising the future of professional spectator sport in the city.
York City FC and York City Knights RL would be at the core of a Community Stadium, but this is also a huge opportunity to provide new facilities for York and the surrounding area:
- Hull and Doncaster have been fortunate to benefit from supportive, pro-active Councils in the last decade. Both stadiums are part of wider regeneration projects that have not only seen the major sports teams flourish, but provided numerous wider benefits for both communities.
- It is an opportunity for our city to create an innovative and sustainable stadium for the future, making use of renewable energy.
- York is a designated Science City and has the chance to create the very first Community Eco Stadium in Britain.
- There is no state-of-the-art synthetic pitch in York. The City of York Hockey Club needs one if it is to meet its ambitions of competing at national level and such a facility can be incorporated and used across a number of sports.
- A lack of grass pitches in York has also been outlined by the Council and could be part of a new sports hub.
- Community health and education can play a strong part. York St John University and York College have both expressed an interest in a development taking inspiration from the Hull College Learning Zone.
- In Preston the local Primary Care Trust provides community health services at the redeveloped Deepdale. This would tie in with the PCT’s desire to invest in new and innovative facilities across the country.
